Raumati Toa Summer Reading Challenge

HOW TO PARTICIPATE:

1. Register here to participate. 

2. Pick up your summer reading pack at the library from December 15 onwards. 

INSTRUCTIONS:

Read for 12 hours over the summer to collect 12 unique taniwha cards.  Read for an extra 6 hours to collect 3 limited super rare taniwha cards.  That’s 18 hours of reading over summer.

Unique Card Quest: Borrow a book, e book or audio book from the library or read one of your own books from home or have an adult read to you for 1 hour in 15-minute slots, cross off each time slot on your reading log and present to a librarian to receive a card.  1 hour of reading gets 1 card. 12 cards to collect, that’s 12 hours of reading over the summer holidays.

Super Rare Card Quests: Once you have collected all 12 unique taniwha cards read for another 2 hours to get 1 super rare card. 3 to collect, that’s an extra 6 hours of reading.  There is a limited amount of super rare cards to be collected, once they are gone that’s it.

Trade: Draw your own Taniwha creation, and trade with librarians to get a super rare card.  Taniwha must have a bio with the following: Name, Habitat, Fun Fact, Personality and superpower.  One taniwha drawing submission only per child.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

HOW MANY BOOKS DO I NEED TO READ?

As many as you like! One really long book may take you more than one hour to read, or you may be able to read lots of picture books in one hour.

CAN I READ FOR MORE THAN THE CHALLENGE HOURS?

Yes! You can read for as many hours as you like, however you can only collect one set of taniwha cards.  Just because you have collected all the taniwha cards doesn’t mean you have to stop reading.

WHEN WILL I KNOW IF I WON A PRIZE?

The draw will take place Wednesday 28 January 2026 and the winners will be notified by phone or email by Friday 30 January 2026.

I AM NOT A LIBRARY MEMBER; CAN I STILL PARTICIPATE?

Yes! You can read your own books at home or if you live in Te Tairawhiti Gisborne Region you can become a library member to get books out.  If you live out of town, you can still submit your entry but will need someone local to collect the prize if you win.

TERMS AND CONDITIONS

Every registered participant will receive one entry to go in the draw to win our Raumati Toa Summer Reading Prize Pack.  Upon collecting your first twelve taniwha cards participants will receive a second entry into the prize draw.  For every super rare card collected participants will receive one entry into the prize draw.  There are three limited edition super rare cards to be collected.  By presenting your reading log to a librarian you are agreeing that the information provided to HB Williams Memorial Library is true and complete.  Boxes ticked on the reading log must be a true representation of the number of fifteen-minute slots a person has spent reading or being read to by an adult.  HB Williams Memorial Library's decision is final, and no correspondence will be entered into.
